Why connect Discord
Without Discord, your transcript still works, but it doesn’t say who is talking. Connected, LoreMonkey reads who is speaking from the Discord app already running on your PC and puts the right character name on each line. Recaps and notes then know who did what.
- No bot joins your voice channel, and nobody else at the table installs anything.
- It’s free on every plan.
- Speaker names work for games played over Discord. A table playing in person, around one microphone, gets a transcript without speaker names.
Before you start
- Use the Discord desktop app, not Discord in a browser.
- Turn on two-factor authentication in Discord (User Settings → My Account). Discord won’t show you the Client Secret without it.
- Join your voice channel, so LoreMonkey can list who is in it.
Guided setup
Open Settings → Discord and press Guided setup. It takes you through six short steps:
- Create your Discord application. Press Create a Discord application and Discord opens its form. Any name works. If Discord asks why you’re there, any answer or Skip is fine.
- Add the redirect URL. In your new application, go to OAuth2 → Redirects → Add Redirect, paste
http://localhostexactly as written, and press Save Changes. A slash on the end breaks it. - Paste the Client ID. In General Information, copy the Application ID and paste it into LoreMonkey.
- Paste the Client Secret. In OAuth2, press Reset Secret and copy it. Discord shows it only once; if you lose it, reset it again. It is stored only on your PC.
- Connect. Discord shows an Authorize prompt the first time. Accept it. Later connects are silent.
- Tag who’s who. Everyone in your voice channel appears. Type each person’s character name, tick Ignore for music bots, and press Save & finish.
Tags are saved per campaign, so the same friend can play a different character in another campaign. Ignore applies to every campaign.
Every session after that
The Session tab shows Discord’s state next to your audio inputs. If it isn’t connected, press Connect there. While you play, the header shows who Discord hears talking.
To change a tag later, open Settings → Discord, press Refresh members if someone is missing, change the name and press Save tags.
If it doesn’t connect
These are the messages LoreMonkey shows, and what each one means.
| Message | Fix |
|---|---|
| Could not reach the Discord desktop client | Discord isn’t running, or you’re using it in a browser. Open the desktop app, sign in, and connect again. |
| Discord is running as administrator while LoreMonkey is not | Both must run the same way. Quit Discord fully from its tray icon and open it normally. |
| OAuth token request failed | The Client Secret is wrong, or the redirect isn’t exactly http://localhost. Check for a slash on the end, reset the secret, and paste it again. |
| Discord authorization was declined or failed | The Authorize prompt was closed or refused. Connect again and accept it. |
| Discord refused the ‘rpc’ scope | Discord has stopped allowing this application. Create a new application, add the redirect, and paste its Client ID and Secret. |
| Nobody is listed to tag | Join the voice channel, then press Refresh members. |
